The games always make a feeble attempt at explaining this away, but they don’t succeed. But that doesn’t stop my character from being a mage and/or travelling openly with them, and throwing magic around in cities. We’re constantly told that they’re susceptible to being possessed by demons, so they have to live in circle towers guarded by templars. With that out of the way, it’s always bothered me that mages can move around so freely in the Dragon Age games. I enjoy the Dragon Age world immensely, and I also fell in love with Greedfall’s world. In other words, both take place in interesting worlds backed by rich lore. I’m not sure why this camp pitstop helps, but hopefully the next incarnation of the game engine will remedy this. This is to apparently let the game load the area you’re fast travelling to. One quirk in Greedfall: every time you fast travel, you’re dumped into an intermediary camp, where you can talk to companions and visit a merchant before you move on to your destination area.

You will anyway though, because quests and missions will pretty much have you exploring the entire area. At the same time, you won’t find anything interesting by exploring them. So they’re smaller, but they’re also not filled with busywork. The areas in Greedfall only contain quest locations and skill altars. Kill a bunch of stuff/find the right doodads, and you’re good. It’s rare though, and these mini areas generally have a sameness to them.

Having said that, you’ll occasionally come across something more interesting, like the fortress in the Western Approach where time is stopped. Shards to collect, landmarks to find, codex entries to read. The areas in DA: I are larger than those in Greedfall. In both games, you can fast travel to an area on the map, an area that has invisible walls. You can’t run from one end of the map to the other. Greedfall and DA: I aren’t open world in the same way that Skyrim is open world. In both games, your character, companions, and NPCs are fully voiced and the voice acting is good. When you gain a level, the only thing you can do is learn something new from your combat skill tree. In DA:I, you can’t put points into anything. In Greedfall, you can put points into strength, health, etc., but you can also put points into things like science, craftsmanship, charm, and lockpicking. I’ll just say that as the story progresses, you discover more about yourself. Also, the main quest has personal ramifications. To me, the story in Greedfall felt much more personal to the character because what’s happening to you isn’t accidental and the people you’re with already know you. In Greedfall, you’ve grown up into the role you play. In DA:I, you’re thrust into a role you may not want. You can play as a male or female in both games. You’ll also find what I have to say helpful because I spell out how DA:I does things too. I’ve written from the point of view of a gamer who’s familiar with DA:I, but don’t leave if you’ve played Greedfall and are wondering whether you’ll like Dragon Age. If you enjoy the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series, you’ll instantly feel at home in Greedfall. It seems pretty clear to me that Spiders based its design on the typical BioWare RPG.

Both have a story-driven main quest and side quests. Both games are single-player RPGs, party-based, use real-time combat, and have companions. Greedfall was developed by Spiders and DA:I by BioWare. In contrast, there’s very little filler in Greedfall. There’s a lot of meaningless busywork in DA:I. By filler, I mean all the collections stuff: shards, landmarks, closing rifts, mosaic tiles, etc. So, it took me twice as long to complete DA:I, but if you remove all the filler, there’s probably about 30-40 hours of gameplay. It took me about 80 hours to complete DA:I’s base game, meaning that I didn’t touch the DLC content (if you’re interested, playing the three DLCs added another 20 hours). Greedfall took me around 40 hours to complete. Do I agree with this after having played the games back-to-back? Read on. I’ve read numerous times in forum threads and comment sections that Greedfall is a poor man’s version of DA:I. I recently played Greedfall for the first time and Dragon Age: Inquisition (DA:I) for the fifth, so both games are fresh in my mind.
